CHAINSAW
WEASEL
[Band
Page]
The
Name?
Chainsaw Weasel is based on the Scott Adams cartoon
Dilbert. When trying to determine how to develop a sense of humor,
Dilbert programmed a computer to help him out. After some number
crunching, the computer determined that the funniest words in the
human language are: Prune Eating Chainsaw Weasel…or any reference
to Gilligan’s Island. While my message is serious and my work can
often be heavy, I wanted to name the band with a name that would
remind me not to take myself too seriously.
What are your songs written about?
Life, love, the pursuit of God. Most of my latest works are very
deep sound beds designed for personal reflection and meditation.
My earlier work was more dance orientated, high energy music. I
have found that the fan feedback never is consistent about what
they are getting form my music…so to God be the Glory and when you
have a chance…you tell me what you think it is about!
What makes a good song?
Interesting structure, non-conformity to the intro, verse, chorus,
verse, pre-chorus, chorus, chorus, outré formulae is important
to me. But ultimately, passion makes for a good song. I don’t care
if it is hardcore gangster rap or new age soaking music, passion
is transparent and transcendent. Without passion music is just noise
and data. Without passion we live our lives in a hollow vacuum.
God is Love and has a passionate desire for our joy…that has to
come across for a song to have any value whatsoever.
What is your favourite song of all time?
Joy Divisions’s – Day of the Lords – Ian Curtis vocal track on that
song spoke to me during a time of my life when I was not sure if
I wanted to live or die. I had not formulated a world view that
had any hope at that point and some how the desperation forced me
to evaluate life with fresh eyes for the first time.
Who would be in your ultimate musical supergroup?
Ian Curtis on Vocals, Michelle Patterson on BGVs, Charles Mingus
on Bass, Django Reinhardt on guitar, Mic Fleetwood on drums and
Monk on keys…I would love to do some heavy punk-jazz fusion some
day….
What is your claim to fame (musical or non
musical)?
That is the hardest question to answer without sounding like a conceited
punk…well in 1999 I won the national innovation award for a fiber
optic patent I was awarded…in 2001 I topped the freestyle hip hop
charts on MP3 for the single from my first full length CD Itch I
Can’t Scratch…that was funny since I was doing club, house, trace
and hard dance at the time…to top that one was a cause for celebration
across my diminutive weasel kingdom…
What are your musical dreams and goals?
To reach peoples hearts without words. To make a difference in their
level of joy. To have them introspectively dive into their Spiritual
life and find a loving, living and vibrant God waiting their for
them with open arms.
Where is your favourite place in the world
and why?
Barcelona, Spain…that place has such a peace about it…such a climate
for artistic expression.
Finish the sentence: "I'll never forget
the first time I...."
....performed live with all my computer gear…I had not developed
any stage presence yet and all it looked like from the gig photos
was a geek programming a bunch of machines…not very exciting…”
Why did you sign up to Sound Aid?
I believe in helping people with sustainable methodology…this was
in effect the message of Jesus, the message of the New Covenant…to
care for the sick, the poor, and the disenfranchised. You can only
show faith and love through action. The action does not save you,
or redeem you but is the natural result of a living and vibrant
faith.
What other Sound Aid artists do you listen
to?
Amber Rose, Blue
Menagerie … I dig both of their sounds. 180
Out is who invited me to participate on Sound Aid…
What do you think are the best ways to
cure world hunger?
End dictatorial rule and fascism across the under developed world.
War, Civil unrest and corruption are more responsible for world
hunger than poor farming methods or natural catastrophe. Men devaluing
and debasing those that they have been charged with protecting…bottom
line…man causes these terrible problems with their pride and lust
for power. We can turn back the tide of destruction by focusing
on peoples value as individuals who are as deserving of the necessities
of life as anyone in a developed Western country…if we look beyond
the boarders, beyond the ideology, beyond the secretarian religious
values and focus on the individual we will see progress. God is
personal and God is a person, He treats each of us this way with
His redemptive plan…we should learn from this and do likewise.
